FAQs about Celtic Symbols

1.    To get an idea about the extensiveness of Celtic art symbols, where exactly did the Celts originate?

The Celts have been around for close to 3000 years. They became prominent just before the period that is known as the ‘Iron Age’. This period roughly started around 700 BC and lasted to about 500 AD. They were initially a group of nomadic tribes that started off in what we now know as Asia Minor. Because of their warring nature, they eventually conquered and incorporated smaller tribes into their stronghold. This continued until almost the whole of Europe was in their control. That was until the Roman Empire started to rise and take over. The Celts that survived the Roman onslaught eventually settled in and around Britain where they put up a formidable stronghold. The Romans in time conquered Britain. The Celts no longer existed as tribes but their cultural heritage has remained immortal.

2.    If I look at their artwork and beautiful symbols I find it hard to believe that a warmongering people created them. Did they follow any particular religion or form of worshipping?

Yes they had their religious practices and strongly believed in the power of the Gods. They were pagans and believed in the power of Nature. The Druids, Bards and the Vates were highly honored and had intimate knowledge about the natural world as well as the spiritual world. The Druids teachings seem to have reignited in modern times and Paganism is steadily on the increase amongst the Brits. Hence I believe the renewed interest in the incredible Celtic heritage.

3.    The Celtic knot never fails to intrigue. Why is it used so extensively?

Yes, the knot is used in most designs, which amongst them are the cross, spirals and animal art.  As the knot has no beginning or end it symbolizes the completeness of life and the continuation of the spirit into eternity. It is a very powerful symbol indeed and one, which the ancient Celts held sacred and dear.

4.    The Celtic cross has been in existence for well over 1000 years. How did this unique symbol come about?

Many believe that the cross was invented by Celtic priests that were, at the time, heavily engaged in converting the Pagans into Christians. About 10 years ago however, a Scottish navigator rediscovered the true purpose of the cross and also for what purpose it has been used thousands of years before. This incredible discovery emphasized the fact that the level of knowledge of the Druids, Bards and the Vates was truly remarkable. The simplistic genius of the Celtic cross can no doubt only come from a person who has insight into a deeper inner understanding. This contact is what the Druids seem to have possessed.

5.    The Celtic love knot – if I wear it will it really create an everlasting love situation between me and my beloved?

If you truly believe it can, it most probably will. The love knot is an exceptionally powerful symbol of eternal love between a couple. As we know by now there is nothing stronger than that that exists between two human beings. If you intend keeping it that way be sure to wear a love knot pendant and give your beloved one as well. Other knots that also represent pure love are the Shamrock knot and the Fisherman’s knot.

6.    Animal art seems to be a favorite amongst the ancient Celts. Their mind-blowing illustrations have inspired modern day tattoo artists to no end and Celtic tattoos have become the new rage. What are the most popular animal tattoos and what do they mean?

As much of the Celtic symbolic meanings have not been verified 100% there are some modern day interpreters that have given a meaning to a particular symbol. If it is generally accepted by the public it will at most remain that way.  The dragon is a very high on the list of choices for those wanting to display a symbol of power. The symbol also signifies good luck and prosperity. Butterflies will most likely appeal to the females and it symbolizes transformation; or a rebirth from the old into the new. Dolphins symbolize prosperity and are popular amongst sailors.
