What is the most popular Celtic Symbol?

If you said the Celtic Cross, you would be right.  The cross with a circle intersecting its four arms as shown in the above logo, is found in numerous grave yards throughout Europe.  This is a symbol that predated christianity and many scholars say that the early christians borrowed their symbol from the Celts.

Hi, my name is Tim Lazaro. If you're like me, you have a curiosity for Celtic symbols. For many years now, everytime I have come across one of these intricate designs, I stop, study it, and try to discover its hidden secrets.

In my study of the Celts, I found that they inhabited parts of Spain. Following up further, I was surprised to discover that Galicia a northwestern province of Spain proudly acknowledges itself as being rooted in Celtic culture. My mother  was born in that beautiful province and so I must have Celtic ancesters. This discovery gave me even more incentive to study my Celtic heritage. When I read about these ancient, proud people, it gives me a warm feeling to know that I have a strong connection to them.

The earliest written information on these ancient people comes from Julius Ceasar and his Gaulic wars. He called these fierce fighters, "the Gauls". And fought them for several years in trying to annex these areas for the Roman empire.  The Gauls were not easily defeated, but eventually they fell to the Roman might.  And for hundreds of years, they fought side by side with the Romans to tame the others who would not yield to the empire.

In the movie King Arthur, we see such a struggle. Arthur, as well as many other Celts, was drafted into the Roman army for 15 years and fought within England. This occurs while Rome is facing its greatest challenges from the barbarians who overrun the city of Rome and England is abandoned. Arthur and his knights fight battles with the more rebellious hordes of northern England that Hadrian's wall was built to keep out.

If you've seen this movie you will see the 'greenish-blue woad' - the paint that many Celtic warriors wore in battle. You also see the many symbols on the shields carried by the armies.

The ancient Celts were a proud people, great craftsmen who designed and hand crafted beautiful, exquisite works of art.  Within this website you will find discussions of the many popular symbols.  Please feel free to browse the articles on this website.  And a blog is available if you wish to comment on the many postings and contribute to the discussions further.

Enjoy!
